Chief Master Sergeant Jay N. Ellis is the 14th State Command Chief Master Sergeant, Virginia Air National Guard based at Joint Force Headquarters, Sandston, Virginia. In this position, he serves as advisor to the Adjutant General of Virginia and the Air Component Commander on quality-of-life issues and concerns of the enlisted corps. The State Command Chief Master Sergeant is the ranking Senior Enlisted member of the Virginia Air National Guard
Chief Ellis grew up in Richmond, Virginia. Chief Ellis entered the Air Force in Oct 1976. Upon graduating technical school at Keesler AFB, MS., as an Avionics Inertial Navigation System Specialist, he was assigned to 192d Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Byrd Field VA. In Nov. of 1982 he cross trained to an Avionics AeroGroundspace Equipment Specialist and was assigned to the 192d Maintenance Squadron working on A-7s and then transitioned to F-16s.
In Jan of 1996 Chief Ellis cross trained to Communication System Manager and was assigned to the 192d Communication's Flight where he served as the Superintendent. In Oct 2007, Chief Ellis helped facilitate the stand-up of the Virginia Air National Guard's first ever Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Squadron. Inclusive with the squadron stand-up was the first integration effort between the 497th ISR Group and the 192d Intelligence Squadron at Distributed Ground Station-1, Langley AFB, Hampton, VA.
Chief Ellis served as the Superintendent of the Communications Logistics Support Element until Jul 2011 when Chief Ellis was assigned as the 192d Intelligence Squadron Chief Enlisted Manager. Chief Ellis was assigned as the 192d FW Command Chief in Nov 2013. Chief Ellis was assigned as the Virginia State Command Chief in Sep 2014.
