VA ANG and USAF commemorate Billy Mitchell
Virginia Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Kenneth Stanley, Staff Sgt. Louis Jackson and Staff Sgt. Kerri White, 192nd Maintenance Squadron ordnance maintenance mechanics, and U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Randal Trosky, 1st Maintenance Squadron ordinance maintenance mechanic, train together as a team by building eight Mark 83 inert bombs during an exercise on July 10, 2016 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. This exercise will support the commemoration of Maj. Gen. Billy Mitchell’s bombing of the German battleship, SMS Ostfriesland, off of the Virginia Capes, July 1921. Billy Mitchell, who is often referred to as the Father of the Air Force, sunk the SMS Ostfriesland to prove a case for the power of an independent air service.
