“I’ve always been good technically with building and repairing things. My background is actually in information technology where I built and worked on computers. And before that, I had my own home improvement business. I used to do a lot of maintenance repairing hot water heaters, air conditioning units, you name it.

It basically comes down to troubleshooting, critical thinking and just learning a system -- it was easy for me to transition to repairing and working on aircraft. It’s also the reason a lot of car mechanics and other mechanics are in the same career field. It’s sort of the same principle and transitions really well.

No one would think I come from IT, but that’s the thing about the Virginia Air National Guard. It’s just normal, everyday, regular folks who have an extensive and diverse background that makes up such a good unit -- an outstanding unit. When we say ‘I am the VaANG,’ I think of people coming from all types of different backgrounds with diverse knowledge and experiences.” --Tech. Sgt. Mark Green, 192nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief
