This edition of the Voices of the VaANG introduces Senior Airman Emma Staten, a geospatial analyst with the 192nd Intelligence Squadron, 192nd Wing, Virginia Air National Guard.

Since she was young, Staten has known she wanted to serve in some capacity. Due to her father’s enlistment in the Navy, Staten was raised in the Virginia Beach area. She grew up surrounded by the sights, sounds and values of service. Though her father’s naval service set a powerful example, she found her calling in the Virginia Air National Guard. As a geospatial analyst, she now plays a critical role in analyzing and interpreting satellite data to support military operations.

“I love it," said Staten. “When I was younger, I thought, ‘Oh I want to be a spy.’ But that was as a kid growing up watching Marvel movies. Then I learned about this career, and I realized, I'm doing what my childhood dreamed of!”

As an avid motorcyclist, active member in her church community, and student who is continuing to further her education, Staten appreciates the flexibility and opportunities the VaANG provides her.

“My favorite part about being a part of the VaANG has been the travel,” said Staten. “I've been really fortunate to go overseas three times already, and also for the jobs that it opened up to me.”

Recognizing the civilian demand for these specialized skills, Staten leveraged her technical skills and experience developed while serving in the VaANG, into a civilian context where her military training continues to provide value in new ways.

“This career is a fairly niche position and is needed in all different capacities of warfighting," said Staten. “I’m a target systems analyst on my civilian side, so I utilize my clearance, imagery capabilities and ability to research. I have a fantastic career at such a young age.”

After nearly four years of service, she actively encourages others to consider a career in the Air National Guard.

“If you are serious about making a career for yourself, I highly recommend it,” said Staten. “It will give you so many avenues, not only education-wise or benefits following you after, but it will also give you many networking opportunities and the chance to meet so many good people.”

This year, her accomplishments were recognized at the Major Command level, earning her the Air Combat Command’s Outstanding Air Reserve Component Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Airman of the Year award. She will continue on to compete against other Airmen across the ARC.

“I have never been the type to be driven by accomplishments or awards,” said Staten. “I just truly found this job enjoyable and I dove into it. I really do love it.”

As she looks ahead, Staten remains committed to her role and delivering actionable intelligence, helping the 192nd Wing stay at the forefront of innovation and national security.
